These receivers enabled them to access unencrypted data sent by multiple planes flying around the globe from one destination to another. The received info was uploaded to the internet and on Flightradar24’s website. All of the aircraft movements recorded by the Flightradar24 are visualized on the map. That’s how Flightradar24 has worked from that time till now. 

However, the name might be misleading for most people, as the technology implemented in this product is far less similar to the world’s conventional definition of radar. 

Military reconnaissance facilities and airports use radar to detect flying objects precisely. With radars, you can detect even those machines or aircraft that don’t emit signals. However, there are multiple similarities between the info one gets with radar and Flightradar24, so the name is somehow justified. 

Multilateration technology is used to track an aircraft that doesn’t have a transponder. It can only be used in regions with several Flightradar24-receiver. The aircraft’s position is thus estimated by gathering the data received by multiple receivers. 

If the aircraft you are trying to track is flying far away from the reach of receivers, you have to use ESTM technology to estimate its precise location. The estimation via this method is pretty complex and demands consideration of various factors for ultimate precision and accuracy. 

ESTM technology can give much more accurate results, especially on shorter flights. For longer ones, the deviation of the result is estimated to be 100km from the original location only if it’s the worst one.

Flightradar24 features yellow and blue-colored symbols all over its map section. These are the aircraft, and the blue markers are the indications of the airports. It’s quite easy to distinguish aircraft sizes by having a look at the size of the symbol representing it. 

Moreover, not all the airports are depicted using blue markers. You can spot only those that are offering regular and scheduled passenger flights. The entire world is lined with airports, and if the map sections show up all of them, you won’t be able to see anything else on the map except for the blue markers.

Hear us shouting YES! Flight Radar enables people to enhance network coverage by sending out free receivers. To get one, you have to apply for receivers on the website. However, there are some requirements that you should meet to host this service. The most important ones include the following:

  • You have access to a stable internet connection 24/7.
  • You can purchase an antenna and get it into our place within one week of receiving the receiver. 
  • You can place an antenna on the top of our roof or somewhere similar without interruption. 

The Flight Radar’s technology isn’t limited to airplanes only. Other air transportation modes are equipped with transponders too, and thus, those can also be tracked with this service. 

Besides flight radar, ship radar can also be way informative and useful. From ferries, container ships, and passenger ships to more, all send similar signals, as do the transponders send similar info like aircraft. No doubt, the info doesn’t feature altitude reading, and there are other differences. Still, the point is both technologies work on the same principle. 

Rail traffic has train radar, but here a different technology is implemented. Train radars often use railroad data sources offered by the public, and the train positions are displayed on the map utilizing the timetable data. However, this info isn’t much updated, and the radar fails to display real-time info. You may also discover GPS-based offers, but still, these are in the minority!
